I want to take a short detour from my usual ‘how to’ posts to tell you about my wardrobe plan for this year. Last year I spent a lot of time defining my personal style. I took an online course called Simply Put Together, I experimented in my closet, read books, and scoured Pinterest for inspiration. This year I will continue to hone in on that style to create an intentional, versatile wardrobe. I will use the tools I developed this past year to style new outfits with the clothes I own. I will outline my plans for the year and I hope you use this as inspiration to consider your own wardrobe plan.

Low Buy Challenge
A “low buy” or “no buy” challenge is exactly what it sounds like, you choose to buy less or no clothes for an amount of time. I have attempted low buy challenges in the past and I rarely stick with them longer than a few weeks or a month. I have already completed a “no buy” challenge for the month of January. Honestly, this was mostly down to annoyance about packages taking too long and the cycle of buying and returning that online shopping perpetuates.
The reason I will do this challenge is to take my own advice to create new looks with the clothes I own. It’s a good way to experiment with my style and get creative.
I will buy clothes to replace items that are worn or to fill a gap in my wardrobe. I will not buy business casual clothes until I know when I’ll be going back to the office. Plus, I already have plenty of work clothes in a spare closet.
Shop My Closet
I recently wrote about how to shop your closet and I plan to use these tips for my own closet. This will force me to freshen up my look with different styling techniques. It will also force me to create new and interesting outfits for the blog without buying new items. No, I will not buy clothes with the excuse that it’s for the blog. 😁
Take Care of the Clothes I Have
Another facet of shopping my closet and not buying new items is to care for the clothes I have. This means tailoring, taking care when washing and storing clothes, and having them repaired rather than throwing them out. I recently read How To Get Dressed, written by Alison Freer, a Hollywood costume designer. She has TONS of tips on how to care for clothes and remove stubborn stains.
My Wardrobe Plan To Curate My Closet
When it is time to purchase an item, I will make sure to buy things that will last. I will consider the price per wear rather than the up front price. A cheap, poorly-made pair of pants is not a bargain if they only last 1 season. On the other hand, a pair that is made well should last years, through many seasons, and will cost less in the long run. It will not only cost less to my wallet but to the environment as well.
Hone In On My Personal Style
Continuing to hone in on my personal style will be a by-product of curating my closet. I will become more discerning. ‘Casual, comfortable’ is my style personality and it has blossomed over the last year while working from home. It will also be interesting to explore my style more with my work clothes, when that time comes.
My Wardrobe Plan For Capsules
I enjoyed creating capsule wardrobes last year so I will continue to do that. I will plan 3-4 capsules this year, about 1 per season. For example, I will start my Spring capsule in March as the weather warms up. The bulky sweaters will be boxed up and lighter tops and pants will make an appearance. There’s no hard cutoff for cold weather, though, and I’ll make sure I keep some warm, cozy clothes in rotation for a while! If you want more information on starting a capsule wardrobe, read my post about Project 333.
Let me know in the comments what your wardrobe plan is for this year!
