Striped Shirt Styled 4 Ways

A striped shirt is one of the most versatile tops I have in my closet. In fact, I have 5 different versions of a striped top right now! A short-sleeved t-shirt, a tank top, a sweater, and 2 long-sleeved shirts. And I need all of them! In this post I’m going to show you 4 ways to wear a striped shirt. If you want more outfit inspiration, check out more of my one item multiple ways posts.

I’ve heard some women say that they can’t wear horizontal stripes for different reasons, and if you really feel that way, that is totally fine, you can still use these outfits as inspiration. But, if you think it’s because horizontal stripes make you look wider, try a shirt with narrow stripes. I can’t change the way you see yourself but, I don’t think stripes will hugely alter the way you look. Well, unless you go for a full-length striped dress or something like that!

Why A Striped Shirt Is So Versatile

Striped shirts are versatile because they (typically) include 2 neutral colors. Of course you find shirts with colored stripes but the “classic” striped shirt is either black and white or navy and white. The neutral colors make a striped shirt easy to pair with any color.

Stripes are also easy to pair with other patterns and prints if you want to try pattern-mixing. I consider myself to be a novice when it comes to pattern-mixing but the one mix that I know I can pull off is stripes and leopard print. Stripes and floral print is a another mix that is pretty foolproof, but I, personally, don’t wear a lot of floral.

Options For A Striped Shirt

My favorite black and white striped t-shirt from Old Navy is no longer available, but I’ve linked a few other options. All of the shirts listed are black and white stripes unless noted otherwise.

1. Casual: Denim jacket, striped t-shirt, olive jeans and leopard sneakers

I started with pattern mixing right off the bat! This is a pretty typical outfit that I’ve seen on Pinterest and social media but that doesn’t mean it’s not great. I love this outfit for casual get-togethers or running errands. You can wear jeans instead, but I suggest making sure your denim jacket and jeans are different washes. For example, if I wore jeans with this outfit I would pair dark-wash jeans with the light-wash jacket so as not to look too matchy-matchy.

2. Casual: Cardigan, striped shirt, jeans and boots

Another casual outfit that would be easy to swap out the cardigan for a jacket or sneakers instead of boots. The combinations are endless! Since this striped shirt has a higher neck than I usually prefer, I paired it with a long, pendant necklace to give the illusion of a more narrow silhouette.

3. Elevated Casual: Moto jacket, striped shirt, jeans and flats

This outfit is a bit more “stepped up” from the other 2 but still casual. This would be great for a date-night out or even for a more laid-back office setting.

4. Business Casual: Blazer, striped shirt, slacks and heeled boots

A striped shirt can even be worn to work! I kept this outfit very simple but it still looks chic. This is definitely an outfit I will wear when I go back to the office.

There you have it! 4 fall outfits with a striped shirt. I hope you find some inspiration in at least one of these outfits and maybe even try out pattern-mixing. What’s your favorite way to wear a striped shirt? Let me know in the comments.
