A black turtleneck is a chic basic that can be worn casually or dressed up. It can give the appearance of a longer, leaner frame, especially when paired with black pants. The one I’m wearing in this post is from Everlane but there are tons of black turtlenecks out there so choose one that is comfortable and doesn’t choke you. I am wearing size medium because I didn’t want it to be tight over my bust. You can also try a mockneck or cowl neck. This post is part of my 4 Ways To Wear Series where I show you how versatile one piece of clothing can be. So far I’ve done a blue gingham shirt and olive green pants.
Here are similar options for a black turtleneck:
- Amazon Essentials – mockneck
- Amazon – Daily Ritual
- Old Navy
- Nordstrom – Halogen
- Nordstrom – Vineyard Vines

1. Casual black turtleneck with sherpa vest
You may need to lint-roll your top after wearing this vest, but it’s so cute and comfy that it’s totally worth it.
- Sherpa vest: Amazon
- Black turtleneck: Everlane
- Black jeans: Nordstrom
- Knee-high boots: Old, but these are similar
- Purse: ThredUp, but this one is similar
2. Black turtleneck with utility jacket
This is an easy outfit to throw on for a casual day out. I think this would look good with slip-on sneakers if it’s not too cold.
- Utility Jacket: Kohl’s
- Turtleneck: Everlane
- Jeans: Old Navy
- Ankle boots: Amazon
- Necklace: Gift from my husband, but this one is similar
- Purse: ThredUp, but this one is similar
3. Casual and chic black turtleneck with moto jacket
- Moto jacket (ThredUp, similar here and here and here)
- Turtleneck: Everlane
- Jeans: Old Navy
- Leopard print flats: Amazon
- Necklace: JC Penney, old, but this one is similar
4. Black turtleneck with blazer for business casual
A black turtleneck always looks good under a blazer.
- Blazer: Old from Ann Taylor, similar, similar, similar
- Turtleneck: Everlane
- Burgundy pants: Amazon
- Black suede boots with heel: DSW, almost sold out, but similar here
- Necklace: Loft, no longer available but similar here and here
Bonus: black turtleneck with denim jacket
I know this is 4 ways to wear, but I couldn’t resist styling this turtleneck with a denim jacket.
- Denim jacket: Nordstrom, this one is similar
- Turtleneck: Everlane
- Black jeans: Nordstrom
- Ankle boots: StitchFix, old, but these are similar. I will probably replace mine soon since I prefer a pointed toe on my ankle boots, not a rounded toe
- Necklace: JC Penney old, but this one is similar
- Purse: ThredUp, but this one is similar
Tips for wearing a black turtleneck
- Since the neck comes up so high I prefer to wear smaller earrings with a turtleneck, either studs or small hoops. That way the earrings aren’t interring with the neck. I am actually wearing earrings in every picture in this post but my hair is covering them and they’re not the star of the show anyway.
- If you typically prefer v-neck tops or have a larger bust, wear a long necklace or layered necklaces. This gives the appearance of a v-neck and can give the appearance of a smaller bust.
- If it’s not too cold, try to show a little bit of your ankle or wrist or even your knees (think skirt or dress). I think showing a little bit of skin looks very feminine and chic so if you’re wearing something that covers your upper chest and neck, try showing skin elsewhere. If it’s cold, though, don’t worry about it and just stay warm!
