Closet basics, wardrobe essentials, closet essentials, whatever you call them, everyone has an opinion about them. You might think basics are boring and you don’t understand why people keep going on and on about them, but by the end of this post I hope to have changed your mind.

What Are Closet Basics

For most people, basics will be just that, basic. Solid colors, basic necklines and hemlines, no fancy details. That’s not to say that your basics have to be boring and plain, if your style lends itself to more bold colors and interesting details. But if you are rebuilding your wardrobe or are just starting out, then you should look to add classic pieces first.

Basics will typically be in solid, neutral colors. Neutrals are shades of black, white, gray, and brown. I also consider navy, olive green, blush pink, and most denim as neutrals, especially for the purpose of basics.

Why Closet Basics Are Important

Many people like to hand out checklists with the exact pieces you need in your closet and, while that is helpful, I want to go a bit further and explain the why behind these lists. Closet basics should make up the core of your wardrobe. This means that once you have a foundation of essential pieces, you can add new and trendy items and they won’t feel out of place. Think of it like a tree: basics are the trunk that makes up your style and the colorful, fun pieces are the branches.

My guess is that you clicked on this post because you want to look effortlessly stylish. Well, basics are the key to looking effortless! Whether you prefer to have a minimalist wardrobe or not, basics are easy to style. You can create an entire outfit with only basics and look stylish. Or, you can add color, print, and details to show your personality. Either way you will be happy that you built your wardrobe with these simple essentials in mind. It will make getting ready in the morning so much easier!

Closet Basics – The Pieces

Tops

  • T-shirts – Crewneck or v-neck, neutral colors, short-sleeve, long-sleeve, sleeveless for different climates/seasons. Great for Layering.
  • Tank tops and camis – More options for layering or to wear in hot weather.
  • Blouses – Great for work or elevated/special occasions.

When you need a more elevated basic top for work or special occasions, a simple blouse will do. If you like button-up shirts, go for the classic white button-up, but, if you’re like me and have never found one that you like, opt for a satin or silk blouse (or polyester for a budget-friendly option). I really like this Vince Camuto blouse, which comes in both black and white.

Sweaters and Cardigans

A thin crewneck or v-neck sweater in a neutral color is a very versatile piece. It can be worn by itself, layered over a turtleneck or collared shirt, or worn underneath a blazer or jacket. You can also layer thinner tops underneath for warmth. Banana Republic is known for their merino wool sweaters that stand up to multiple washings.

Blazers, Jackets, Vests, Coats

A third layer is important to completing an outfit and looking effortlessly put together. Choose a few outer layers that work for your lifestyle and climate. Blazers are great for work and elevated casual looks. For jackets you can never go wrong with a denim jacket and a moto or leather (or faux-leather) jacket. If black leather is too edgy for you, try suede, or opt for a lighter colored leather jacket.

Depending on the climate where you live you may or may not need a few winter coats. As someone who experiences all 4 seasons, I prefer to have a few options to choose from. A long, puffer-style coat for those below-freezing days is crucial. You also can’t go wrong with a wool coat in black, gray, or brown.

Dresses

Dresses deserve an entire category to themselves since they count as both a top and bottom. The key to finding a classic dress that works for you is a lot of trial and error, sorry! My advice is to try different dresses until you find one that you love. Black is a versatile color for a dress but don’t discount navy or gray.

A few things to look for when trying a dress:

  • Can you walk comfortably in it?
  • Are you showing too much skin for your liking when you sit down?
  • Can you wear it layered underneath a jacket, blazer, etc.?
  • Is it made of material that could be worn in different climates?
  • Can you easily dress it up or dress it down for multiple occasions?

Bottoms

  • Jeans

Finding the perfect pair of jeans can be a nightmare, but once you find them, you will be so happy. Jeans come in lots of different colors and washes. Lighter wash denim is more casual while black or dark wash jeans (with no distressing) can be dressed up. Try different styles and cuts of jeans: skinny, straight-leg, bootcut, girlfriend/boyfriend, cropped, etc. Skinny jeans are great for a lot of occasions but cropped boyfriend jeans are more relaxed and casual. If you find jeans to be too rigid and uncomfortable, look for pairs that have stretchy material. Most skinny jeans will have some stretch to them.

  • Trousers – Even if you don’t work in an office, a nice pair of neutral colored slacks can be worn for more than just work.
  • Leggings

Yes, leggings are pants (trousers), as long as they are completely opaque. A classic pair of black leggings can be worn so many ways. If you want to make sure your bum is covered, look for tunic-length tops and long cardigans and jackets. You can even tie a jacket or sweatshirt around your waist if your top is too short! Leggings also turn your skirts and dresses into cold-weather-appropriate outfits.

  • Skirts and shorts

Similar to jeans, it’s best to try different types of skirts and shorts to see which best fit your style and climate. There are so many different styles of skirts and shorts to choose from, you’re bound to find at least one to love. Apply some of the same questions from the dresses category, especially when looking for a skirt.

Shoes

  • Flats – Make sure they are comfortable to walk in and don’t cause blisters. Nordstrom has a “comfort” category for shoes!
  • Heels – If you are uncomfortable in high heels, try a wedge or block heel. They’re easier to walk in but still elevate your outfit (pun intended).
  • Boots – Boots are essential for bad weather. A few pairs in your closet will make your life much easier if you experience rain, snow, sleet, or any cold weather. Or if you just like boots!
  • Sandals – Who doesn’t love a good sandal? Try something more substantial than flip-flops if you want more versatility out of your shoes.
  • Sneakers – A cute pair of sneakers can take an outfit from ‘just ok’ to quite stylish. I really like the Dr. Scholl’s Madison sneakers.

What You Should Pay For Closet Basics

You will often hear that you should be investing in your basics. I think that’s a great sentiment in theory, but you should buy whatever fits in your budget. If you feel strongly about purchasing organic cotton and you can afford to shell out the extra cash, then go ahead. If you have a tight budget, then stick to secondhand stores or budget-friendly retailers like Old Navy. While basics should last through many seasons and trends, I don’t believe you should go broke buying them. Amazon Essentials brand is a great place to start and if you’re looking for mid-range prices, try Nordstrom.

And there it is! All the reasons you need to have basics in your closet as well as a few things to look for.
